On 5 November 2019, Dr. Amani Whitfield presented a wonderful paper titled: “Sketches of Everyday Enslaved Black People in the Canadian Maritimes.” This was part of our Racism and the Colour of Democracy Speaker Series.

Dr. Harvey Amani Whitfield is professor of American and Canadian History at the University of Vermont. He is the author of, Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860, The Problem of Slavery in Early Vermont, 1777-1810, North to Bondage: Loyalist Slavery in the Maritimes, and Black Slavery in the Maritimes: A History in Documents. His current book project is entitled, Biographical Sketches of Black Slaves in Atlantic Canada, which documents the lives of 1,300 enslaved people.
