Renée Lafferty-Salhany is an associate Professor of History at Brock University, whose current research explores the things which went into, and came out of men’s bodies, during the War of 1812.  The project, linking medical, cultural, social and military approaches to the war, is inspired by her interest in the history of drinking and, more broadly, the history of sin.  Her first book, The Guardianship of Best Interests, explored the world of children’s institutions in Halifax from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, and was awarded the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio Atlantic Prize in 2014.
